Dr. Mercy Dawson, an ophthalmologist at the St. Dominic Catholic Hospital at Akwatia in the Eastern Region, says cataract is a treatable eye disease so it should not be the cause of blindness by anyone.

The eye surgeon advised persons with vision problems due to cataract to ensure they go the eye care units at various hospitals for checking to avoid losing their sights.

Dr. Dawson was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a free cataract surgery exercise at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Hospital in Sunyani.

The five-day surgery exercise was organized by the SDA Hospital in collaboration with the National Cataract Outreach program with support from the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP).

About 45 specialists made up of ophthalmologists, opticians, optometrists, ophthalmic and general nurses played various lead roles in the exercise, which is expected to end brought together to perform the surgeries from Monday, June 10 to Friday June 14.

It aimed at bringing the surgery (eye care services) closer to the people, particularly those who do not have money to afford private surgery and were suffering from the diseases.

As at the time of the visit by this reporter, 30 males and 43 females including a 13-year-old girl and a 100-year-old woman had their surgeries done successfully.

According to Dr. Dawson, cataracts, refractive error and glaucoma were the commonest among eye diseases, but cataracts is treatable while glaucoma can be managed if detected early.

With the problem of refractive error, the patients can be given eyeglasses, she explained.
