Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has heaped praise on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his handling of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Following the passage of the bill by Parliament last week, there is pressure on the president to assent to the bill.

There is also a warning that the international community including the World Bank will turn their back on Ghana and withhold support if the bill becomes law.

The international community argues that Ghana will be moving away from its enviable record on human rights observance if the bill becomes law.

Reacting to this, President Akufo-Addo says nothing of that sort will happen.

“I am aware that last week's bi-partisan passage by Parliament of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on a Private Member's motion, has raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana that she may be turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law.

“I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned,” the President shared in a post by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency.

The President further noted that the operation of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in the country.

Commenting on these, Richard Ahiagbah has commended President Akufo-Addo for his posture.

According to him, the President has excelled in the handling of the issue and will be recognised by history for doing a great job.

“Finding the delicate balance to maintain cohesion in society, especially on a fundamental issue such as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, is an art that distinguishes great leaders from ordinary ones. H.E. Akufo-Addo will go down as a great leader who hastened slowly to get it right once,” Mr. Ahiagbah said in a post on X.
