Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, has criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo for introducing politics into the State of the Nation address delivered on Tuesday, February 27.

Mr. Opoku contends that the President’s unnecessary promotion of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, was inappropriate for the solemn occasion mandated by the constitution.

In an interview with Citi News, the MP voiced his disapproval of the President’s actions, stating that using such a state function to campaign for any candidate is wrong.

“He [President Akufo-Addo] politicized the whole presentation because he used that solemn atmosphere to campaign for Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer. You heard him loud and clear campaigning on that platform for Bawumia, and for me, that was needless and should not have been part of that sacred constitutional duty.”

Furthermore, the Asunafo South lawmaker accused the president of attempting to shield the vice president from accountability for the current economic challenges faced by the country.

“Again, the president came to the House attempting to extricate the vice president from being blamed for the economic mess they have created.”
