National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has indicated that the claim by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that online passport acquisition was introduced by the New Patriotic Party is false.

During his national address last Wednesday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government digitalised the passport office with oversight from my office.

“We digitalized the passport office with oversight from my office. With digitization, the average turnaround time for the acquisition of passports has been significantly reduced and today you can apply for your passport online from home 24 hours a day.

“The digitization of the passport application process has resulted in a major increase in the number of passports processed annually as well as the revenue yield to the passport office. In 2018, a total of 346,911 passports were issued with a revenue of GHC11.8 million,” Dr. Bawumia said in his address.

Reacting to this, Sammy Gyamfi has noted that the Vice President peddled falsehood.

According to him, the online passport acquisition process was initiated by the NDC government.

“Bawumia’s claim that this government introduced the online passport application system is a lie which must be dismissed in its entirety. On the contrary, the online application system was launched by Hon. Hannah Tetteh, the foreign Minister of the NDC/Mahama government in December 2016,” Sammy Gyamfi said.

Sammy Gyamfi added that claims by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that online passport application has eliminated corruption in the passport application process is also false.

He said this claim is completely belied by the recent outburst by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayokor Botchey who as recently as 2023 complained about the corrupt activities of middlemen popularly known as “goro boys”.
