Dr. Bawumia delivered an uninspiring and sleep-inducing Vision statement on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the UPSA.

In this short opinion piece, I want to focus on how Dr. Bawumia’s Vision statement has ridiculed Akufo-Addo’s abysmal and woeful track record as well as how that is contributing to the malfunctioning of Dr. Bawumia’s Presidential ambition.

Dr. Bawumia has indeed ridiculed Akufo-Addo’s unappealing records of which he is still part as the Vice President for over 7 years now. Is it not intriguing? This gives credence to the largest Opposition NDC Party and well-meaning Ghanaians for criticizing the appalling performance of the Akufo-Addo’s regime.

Dr. Bawumia, in trying very hard to prove he will his own after winning the Flagbearership of the NPP Party, has scored an ‘own goal’ in my opinion.

Unbelievably, Dr. Bawumia said his regime will abolish the most contentious e-levy or MoMo tax as well as other obnoxious taxes passed by the Akufo-Addo-led regime of which Dr. Bawumia is centrally part. Dr. Bawumia also helplessly looked on as the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta continuously borrowed and messed up the economy.

To hint his perceived frustration to the public in Akufo-Addo’s government, he appealed to Ghanaians to promote him from a ‘Driver’s mate’ to the main ‘Driver’ on December 7, 2024. This is also a highly unfortunate driver-mate analogy as he is indeed the ‘spare driver’ and has executive powers to have shown his sterling leadership qualities, if any.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia has also shot himself in the foot by appearing to pitch himself against his boss, Akufo-Addo, upon whom he ascended the Vice Presidency.

Painful as it may seem to President Akufo-Addo, the truth is that his highly corrupt and disappointing track record in the Fourth Republic is hard to support. Ironically, even the Vice President as well as Alan Kyeremanteng who is now an Independent Presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections are finding it so difficult to defend this disappointing Akufo-Addo-led government.

The Vision statement of Dr. Bawumia was riddled with a lot of his usual high-sounding economic lectures instead of being truthful to Ghanaians by apologizing for such fallacious government policies and draconian taxes that have impoverished many Ghanaians under their unpopular regime.

Dr. Bawumia has also failed to offer transformative policy ideas but rather majoring on minor issues such as making National Service non-compulsory, augmenting digitalization and claimed existing polices or propositions announced by former President Mahama of the NDC Party during his rather long and boring Vision speech last week on 7th February 2024.

The inconsistencies of Dr. Bawumia’s words in his speech and actions in government coupled with Akufo-Addo’s divisive leadership style doomed his presidential ambition as that has exacerbated his credibility crisis going into the 2024 general elections.
