Does Gaslighting Martin Amidu See Crushing Defeat for NDC in Election 2024? – Part 1

Feature Article Does Gaslighting Martin Amidu See Crushing Defeat for NDC in Election 2024? – Part 1
FEB 11, 2024 LISTEN

In his largely and characteristically desultory and rhetorically incoherent so-called “2024 Harmattan School: Accountable Governance, Violent Extremism and 2024 Elections” – Subtitled “Keynote Address Under the Sub-Theme: CITIZENS [SIC] ACTIONS, INDEPENDENCE OF STATE INSTITUTIONS AND ELECTIONS [SIC] 2024, HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY FOR DEVELOPMENT STUDIES, TAMALE, GHANA” (Modernghana.com 2/9/24), the Jeremiah “Jerry” John Rawlings-worshipping Martin ABK Amidu, having apparently espied crushing electoral defeat on the proverbial wall for the John “European Airbus Payola” Dramani Mahama-led main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strategically and all too predictably decided to lamely and crudely deploy the jaded tactic of “Gaslighting” to quaintly sow morally untenable seeds of doubts in the minds of as many eligible Ghanaian voters as possible, in hopes of prejudicing them against the incomparable and the unprecedented achievements of the 2024 Candidate Mahamudu Bawumia-led ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In particular, the first Presidential Running-Mate of a then-Candidate John Evans Atta-Mills, for the 2000 General Election (there were three of them in all), luridly and disingenuously attempts to sophistically set a higher moral ground and political standard for the leadership and the institutional establishment of the neoliberal and social-intervention oriented New Patriotic Party. In stark contrast, the longest-serving Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, as well as the shortest-serving substantive Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, in the governments of the late Presidents Rawlings and John Evans Atta-Mills, respectively, asserts, rather amateurishly and simplistically, that since the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party was voted into power with an unprecedented landslide victory in the 2016 Presidential Election, primarily because the then-incumbent President Mahama-led government of the National Democratic Congress had been thoroughly hobbled by rank official corruption, and the effective grinding of Ghana’s macroeconomy to a screeching halt, it perfectly stands to reason for Ghanaian voters to unwisely but naturally and logically return the august democratic reins of governance to the twice-defeated and hopelessly payola-drunk and crime-prone Bole-Bamboi native from the Akufo-Addo-created Savannah Region.

In essence, the thinly veiled thesis of this rabid Akufo-Addo critic is that Candidate Mahama is the Devil’s incarnate that Ghanaians already know and have already superbly demonstrated that they can comfortably live with this Chief Apostle of the Cash-and-Carry Ideology of deliberate and systematic strangulation of Ghana’s macro- and microeconomies, such as was callously and unconscionably visited on the Ghanaian people for four-and-half of the most protracted number of years on Ghana’s political or electoral calendar. The latter reference is, of course, to the Stygian and the economically regressive pall of Dumsor, made globally infamous by the unspeakably incompetent Mahama-led regime of the National Democratic Congress. In the main, the critic highlights the criminal mischief that went on behind the scenes vis-à-vis the Betty Mould-Iddrisu-engineered and Atta-Mills-endorsed Woyome Mega-Heist.

Now, the stark difference between the admittedly almost equally corrupt Akufo-Addo government and the previous Mahama-led regime of the National Democratic Congress, which the pathologically partisan Mr. Amidu conveniently fails to underscore, is the objectively incontrovertible fact that amidst all the vociferous plaints of rank corruption among the key operatives of the New Patriotic Party also exist such monumental landmark legacy programs as the Akufo-Addo-implemented Fee-Free Senior High School and Vocational and Technical Systems, a game-changing program that is apt to facilitate the revolutionary recovery or renaissance of Ghana’s long-lost pride of place in the socio-culturally indispensable field of education, economic and scientific development, among a host of other fields of human endeavor.

In other words, healthy partisan competition in any robust constitutional democracy invariably depends on a fair comparative analysis of the relative magnitude of the respective contributions of the key or the major institutional establishments in the game or on the ground, as it were. In Ghana, the two key of major institutional players in the game are the presently ruling New Patriotic Party and the country's main opposition National Democratic Congress. What is even more significant to highlight here is the fact that kinks, warts and all, the New Patriotic Party remains unarguably the most progressive institutional establishment anywhere on the African Continent and, to be certain, even well beyond. There is not a single significant social-intervention program or project that any of the double-salary thieving leaders and their associate stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress, including Mr. Amidu, could credibly and confidently point to that could be creditably deemed to put both the National Democratic Congress and the presently ruling New Patriotic Party on an even keel or on equal terms vis-à-vis the critical development of our beloved Sovereign Democratic Republic of Ghana.

For Martin Amidu, however, it well appears that the Cash-and-Carry and the criminally and the kleptocratic leadership of the National Democratic Congress has a constitutionally inalienable and inviolable purchase on corruption, which actually makes Candidate-General John “SADA-Ouagadougou Nkonfem” Dramani Mahama even more attractive than he was in 2016, when he and his Ali Baba cronies of Savannah Accelerated Development Authority infamy were “Tsunamistically” and “Gazafically”vanquished in the polls by the now-President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Bawumia.
