Adwoa Safo loses Dome Kwabenya NPP primaries by 866 votes margin

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has lost her bid for re-election on the ticket of the NPP in the upcoming general elections.

According to the results, Adwoa Safo polled 328 votes but lost to her closest contender Mike Oquaye Jnr, who obtained 1,194 votes. Sheila Oppong came third with 186 votes.

Her defeat has been widely attributed to her extended absence from parliament and ministerial duties without permission in 2022.

As Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo was frequently under fire for failing to show up to work or vote on important government business before parliament.

Her many attempts to provide reasons for her absence were roundly criticized and seen as weak justifications by the the general public.

The loss now ends Adwoa Safo's prospect of representing Dome Kwabenya, where she has been MP since 2012, in the 2024 general elections.

She took the mantle from former Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Mike Oquaye in 2012 and now handing it back to his son, Mike Oquaye Jr, now the NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
