The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the proposed regulation aiming to restrict the importation of key products.
Amid concerns, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at a press conference by the NDC has called on stakeholders to unite against the move.
Trade Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond is pushing for restrictions on items such as rice, fruit juice, margarine, cement, fish, and sugar, among other things through the import restrictions L.I.
KT Hammond aims to boost the local economy and strengthen the cedi, requiring importers to seek permission for the specified products.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson expressed dismay, stating that the policy lacks consideration for existing alternatives and may exacerbate inflation.
He argued that restricting imports without viable local substitutes could burden Ghanaians further, adding that such a move is retrogressive.
He shared the view that if the move is successful, there would be potential favoritism in the licensing process.
In addition to import concerns, The Minority Leader raised alarm over proposed tax measures.
The NDC leader in Parliament highlighted the imposition of VAT on non-life insurance, a 5% VAT flat rate on real estate, and VAT on various essential items, including textbooks and domestic air travel.
Calling on the Trades Union Congress, Civil Society Organizations, traditional authorities, the clergy, and the media, Dr. Ato Forson said there is a need to collectively reject what he deems "obnoxious" import restrictions.
