The Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyepong has called on Ghanaians to contribute generously towards the country's development instead of relying on donor countries and the Breton Woods Institutions.

According to Mr. Agyapong some people sacrificed their lives to get the nation this far hence it is time for the current generation to take over.

Mr. Agyapong made the call when he presented a cheque for ¢250 million out of a total ¢1 billion pledge he made to help establish a medical school at the University of Cape Coast.

He stressed the need for the training of more medical staff to reduce the stress on current acute numbers of staff, and also to forestall instances of the few holding the rest of the nation to ransom.

He recalled that formerly the health worker was the sympathetic professional with a lot of compassion for the suffering, however the same cannot be said of a lot of those in practice now who he said are mainly motivated by money.

Mr. Agyapong expressed the hope that his donation would serve a good example for others to emulate.

The University says it would go ahead with the programme in spite of official foot-dragging over financing and come August 1, the first batch of Medical Students would be admitted to pursue the programme.
