PRESIDENT J. A. Kufuor has assured the government and people of Burundi of the support of the African Union in their search for a lasting peace in that country.

With the signing of a peace agreement and its on-going implementation, the President expressed the hope that Burundi and its surrounding countries would be stabilised.

President Kufuor who is the Chairman of the AU gave the assurance when the Burundian President, Nkurunziza Pierre, called on him at the Castle on Wednesday.

Mr Pierre who was returning home from Cote d’Ivoire made a brief stopover in Accra to brief President Kufuor on the peace process in his country.

President Kufuor commended his Burundian counterpart for his all inclusive approach towards the peace process and said, 'much of Africa will be behind you.'

He also expressed the hope that foreign direct investments would flow when peace is restored to the region.

Earlier, President Pierre said Burundi had had many challenges as a result of the civil war.

But with the signing of the ceasefire agreement, he said, a new military and police have been formed and called for the support of the AU.

He said he was happy to see Africans, especially the people of Burundi take their own decisions because of their desire for peace, adding that 'we are managing the post war situation.'
