Agbogbloshie Market To Be Closed Down For Two Weeks

Accra Mayor, Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, is once again on a collision course with several thousands of traders and market women who make their living at the Agbogbloshie market in Accra.

The Accra Mayor has directed that the market be closed down for two weeks, beginning Valentine's Day, February 14, for a massive clean up exercise.

This follows a recent clash with traders and hawkers in the Central Business District during the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) decongestion exercise that cleared thousands of hawkers off the streets.

Tonnes of filth and legions of rodents are the target of the AMA's latest clean up and fumigation exercise which is meant to rid the market of unbearable stench.

However, thousands of market women who virtually live and make their living at the market will have none of that from the AMA.

The market women are very angry with the AMA. 'We feed our husbands and children with the money we make daily so how do they expect us to eat if they close the market for two weeks', they complained.
