The mining industry supported mining communities and other groups with about ¢2.2 trillion in 2005. The industry also earned $431,483,690, representing 48 per cent of total mineral revenue in foreign exchange for Ghana within the same period.

The President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Mr Jurgen Eigendaal, who said this during a presentation ceremony in Accra yesterday gave the assurance that the industry would operate through responsible environmental and social behaviour in host communities so as to maintain the indispensable social licence necessary for sustainable mining operations.

The School of Public Health of the University of Ghana, Legon, received a cheque of ¢50 million while the Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation, was given ¢10 million at the presentation ceremony.
