STC SIT UP!

STC SIT UP!
24.01.2007 LISTEN

KINDLY ALLOW me to express my views and concern about the Government's transport company. I know your widely-read newspaper will publish them for early implementation for the betterment of our dear Nation.

Individuals and companies have invested in the transportation business as the Government of Ghana serves its quota through the Inter-City State Transport Company (STC).

There is no doubt that over a thousand people patronize the services of the popular STC on a daily basis but research and observations are that passengers have lost confidence in this company due to poor management.

One wonders if there is even a management for this State Transport Company and if they have lived up to expectation.

Ironically, mosquitoes usually invade the dawn buses to enjoy the air conditioning facility and also feed on the distressed passengers. The departure time is always delayed without any tangible reason. All these happen even at the national head office, let alone their regional offices.

In light of the above, private companies in the transport business should start plying routes like Accra-Takoradi, Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Hohoe etc. to make the Management of STC wake up from their slumber.

They should learn from the Communications Industry in Ghana, which is expanding steadily due to competition.

The Ghana Government, hence the Sector Minister, should investigate and bring to book those responsible for this lackadaisical attitude within the management of STC. I think there is the need for a shake up because Time Consciousness is not their objective and uttermost priority, as portrayed. It is high time Ghanaians changed their attitude towards "Government Work". They should be dedicated and enjoy working in such an organisation.

I am using this medium to plead with the appropriate authority to ensure that there is proper management and good service from the Inter-City State Transport Company. It seems many past complaints fell on deaf ears as their services deteriorate day in and out.

The idea of bringing the luxury buses was perfect but I doubt if that lives up to expectation. The television, to entertain the already stressed-out passenger, is never switched on throughout the long hours of the journey.

Last but not the least, Security men should be positioned at the Accra (Awudome) premises since some passengers are being attacked by armed robbers on their way to the STC yard.

I hope the service of the Nation's only Intercity Transport facility, will be improved for smooth patronage.
