NPP NPP flagbearership race is contest of the brain, not beauty pageant – Dr. Afriyie Akoto

The immediate past Minister for Food and Agriculture and aspiring flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has shot down conversations about his age being an issue.

Some Ghanaians have been lamenting that the mismanagement of the country by President Akufo-Addo is due to his age and will not dare entrust it into the hands of another 'old man.'

But speaking on Accra-based Angel TV’s Anopa Bofo morning show, Mr. Afriyie Akoto said old age is not a limitation for the presidency.

He cited President Biden of America, who first came into office at the age of 79. He cited former President Mahama’s “abysmal” performance in his first term despite being a young and energetic man in his 50s at the time.

He noted that the most important ingredient is having in-depth knowledge and experience to govern a country.

He stressed that the party’s upcoming contest is not a beauty pageant but a contest of the intellect where the one with good policies will be crowned victorious by the delegates.

"Listen, let me tell you, everybody has challenges; how old was John Mahama when elected President? He was in his 50s, right..., and we all can attest to his performance. He led us into dumsor, so that belief is irrelevant," he highlighted.

He further established that "when they see me, they see that I'm more youthful than them... It's not about handsomeness!! "Look, it is not a beauty contest; it is a contest of the brain."
