The World Food Programme (WFP) has airlifted the first consignment of relief items from its newly established Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Accra to Chad.
It is made up of 26 tonnes of high energy biscuits and three mobile tents urgently needed in Abache, Chad, according to a statement by Amer Daoudi, Director of Operation and Transport of the WFP.
The Accra depot is part of five planned hubs located around the world, the statement said, adding that the network of depots was conceived to enable the WFP to respond speedily to major crisis around the globe.
The Accra depot was opened on December 5, 2006 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the WFP and the government to serve the West Africa sub-region. It stores stand-by supplies such as high-energy biscuits, equipment, drugs, potable water, medical, and sanitation facilities and radio and telecommunication equipment.
The statement said the location of the depot in Accra makes Ghana a key partner in the humanitarian logistics chain.
In 2005, the WFP, which is the food aid arm of the UN system, distributed four million tonnes of food to 96.7 million needy people in 82 countries.
