It was an emotional moment when Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the just-ended Nigerian general elections, was addressing his supporters for the first time after his defeat.

The former Anambra state governor broke into tears when reflecting on how he should have been the one being addressed as the president-elect but has been allegedly “twisted” in favour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

After the Saturday, February 25, elections, the man who has always said "it's my turn to be the president," Bola Tinubu, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, mentioned that Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 to defeat his closest rivals and candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, who scored 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 respectively.

But reacting to his defeat, the man who was tipped by many to win said the election was rigged.

He claimed that his party won the election and promised to prove his claim to Nigerians.

In his words, "The Labour Party won the election, and I will prove it. I have had several phone calls where I asked people to remain calm and peaceful, but that has nothing to do with what I am challenging; I am challenging the process.

He added, "If a process is faulty, it is faulty; in fact, you can’t build peace on a faulty foundation; it cannot happen anywhere in the world."
