By Innocent Appiah

FIVE petty traders, have been arrested for attempting to secure stalls at the newly constructed pedestrians market at Odawna, Kwame Nkrumah Circle with voter identity cards suspected to be fake.
They are Omari Dartey, Eric Darko, 29; Afia Atta (alias Christiana Nyamah), 35; Josephine Ashimate, (aka. Aku), 31 and Kwasi Ampofo, 36.
Chief Superintendent Angwotube Awuni, Accra South Divisional Police Commander of Police, told the Times that, the suspects were arrested last Thursday when officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) who were allocating the stores to applicants detected that identity cards presented by them were not genuine.
He said a search on Darko after the arrest, revealed by them two other identity cards bearing two names, and when he was interrogated, he admitted that one was not genuine. Both cards have C041505 and 22023853 (HF) as the same polling station and voter identity numbers respectively.
He said that he used Eric Darko his official name in school during the registration of the voter identity cards, but when he submitted that to the AMA, his colleagues who knew him as Kwabena Darko became suspicious and told the officials about it.
However, he explained that he decided to secure another voter identity card using the name Kwabena Darko, since he was having problems with the card.
Mr. Awuni said Darko confessed that he paid 150,000 cedis to someone at the Post Office area who produced to him the fake identity card, but said he could trace his where about.
The case is consequently being processed for court.
Mr. Awuni said the other suspects denied that the identity cards were fake, insisting that they voted with them in the last general elections.
The Commander said the identity cards of the four had been taken to the Electoral Commission for verification.
