(Congo Town, Liberia): The Revolutionary National Youth League of the ruling Congress for Democratic Change in Liberia and the Youth League of the ruling African National Congress in South Africa are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster Pan-African solidarity and promote political exchanges and collaboration between the two parties.

On Friday, February 24, 2023, a zoom meeting was held among executive members of the two institutions. In the meeting, a draft MOU, written by the CDC Youth League and endorsed by the ANC Youth League, was discussed, and executives of the two parties’ youth leagues focused on how they could collectively work together to achieve several youth-driven initiatives in Liberia and South Africa.

This was disclosed by Emmanuel Mulbah Johnson, Chairman of the CDC Youth League, who is leading throngs of young people in the ruling political party in Liberia. In a bilateral zoom meeting with ANC Youth League's National Convener Nonceba Mhlauli and senior executives on Friday, Chairman Johnson said the agreement, when signed, will enable the two parties’ youth leagues to consolidate relations, and work together in exploring new ways to enhance friendship.

The draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is historic, in terms of symbolism and substance. It binds the two parties’ youth leagues to an intensive negotiating process whose ultimate goal is to promote Pan-African solidarity, friendship, and collaboration between the two parties. Although it is a preliminary rather than a final document, the draft MOU sets out a vital framework, under which substantive negotiations will take place.

When officially signed, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will eradicate youth unemployment, which is global phenomenon, and deal with the high rates of substance abuse among youth, thereby leading to empowerment and development. It will also focus on areas like education for the enlightenment of the youth of both parties and unlock economic opportunities that will benefit the two countries.

ANC Youth League National Convener Nonceba Mhlauli has expressed her institution's commitment to working with the CDC Youth League to achieve this partnership between the two parties. Both the CDC Youth League and the ANC Youth League have agreed to enroll some of the brightest minds in the CDC into the OR Tambo School of Leadership and attend the ANC Youth League’s upcoming congress in South Africa in the coming months.

The South African Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Liberia, H.E. Professor M. Igbal Jhazbhay, was part of the zoom dialogue.
