The Ministry of Fisheries is collaborating with various stakeholders in the fishing industry to boost fish production in the country.

The sector Minister, Mrs Gladys Asmah, who made the statement said the demand for fish in the country was high and that plans were being made to encourage the cultivation of fish on a large scale for both domestic use and for export.

The Minister made the statement when students of the Oceanography and Fisheries Students' Association (OFISA) of the University of Ghana, Legon, paid a courtesy call on her in Accra.

Mrs Asmah said the ministry had developed a programme to train fishermen on production of fingerlings, and the first batch of 12 fishermen had completed the course.

She said the ministry was going to further give them financial support to enable them establish their own farms to produce fingerlings for the domestic market.

She expressed concern about the poor sanitation in the country's beaches, and said “it was the responsibility of everyone to keep our beaches clean.”
