The Eastern Regional Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, Miss Golda Asante, has observed that, there was a correlation between the high incidence of HIV infections in certain communities in the Eastern Region and the people's patronage of social programmes such as funerals.
According to Miss Asante, there is an evidence to suggest that residents in certain localities, particularly those suited for hosting social programmes such as funerals were showing higher prevalence rates to HIV infections.
Such tendencies, she explained, could be due to the high use of alcohol at social functions and the evidence that shows that the use of alcohol was likely to impair the ability of the abuser to make sane decisions.
In such situations, drunken lovers who would be meeting for the first time, were not likely to use any protective measures during their intimacy due to the high alcohol intake.
Miss Asante made these revelations when she addressed members of the New Juaben branch of the Eastern Disability Network (EDN) on Monday to mark this year's International Day of the Disabled.
She stressed the need for people to voluntarily test to know their HIV status so that they could be persuaded to engage in behaviours that would not worsen the HIV situation in the country.
Making a presentation on opportunities available to the disabled on the labour market, the New Juaben Municipal Labour officer, Mr. J.A. Terkpetey, said government through systematic actions had caused the removal of things that
use to militate against the easy access of the disabled on the job market .
He however, asked them to register with his outfit so that information on vacant positions could be readily made available to them and as well protect them from employers that were likely to take undue advantage of their situation.
The Eastern Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mr. Gyamerah Danquah reminded the members of the EDN that it was an offence for them not to send their minors to school.
