The NDC Member of Parliament for Jomoro constituency, Dorcas Affo-Toffey has welcomed the court ruling today.

She said the case was a ploy by her opponent to distract her from serving her people.

She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the most high God, former President John Dramani Mahama, and the NDC legal team for their support throughout her journey.

“At long last the frivolous petition challenging my nationality as a member of parliament for the good people of Jomoro has accordingly been dismissed by the Sekondi high court today.

“This two-year battle was only to distract me from performing my parliamentary duties,” she said in a tweet following the verdict.

She added, “I’m grateful to H.E John Dramani Mahama, Uncle Kofi Totobi Quakyi and the NDC legal team most especially lawyer Godwin Kudzo Tameklo for their unflinching support.

“I would also extend my profound gratitude to the minority caucus in parliament, All NDC executives at National, Regional, Constituency and Branch levels and the good people of Jomoro and the entire NDC fraternity for their prayers and encouragement.”

Finally, after about 20 months of court hearings, a case challenging the citizenship of Dorcas Affo-Toffey has been settled.

A constituent, Joshua Emuah Kofie, filed a case at the Sekondi-Takoradi High Court 2 challenging the eligibility of the MP to contest as a representative of the people in the constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) because she allegedly has no Ghanaian nationality.

According to the complainant, the legislator holds multiple nationalities, including American and Ivorian citizenship, which the 1992 Constitution forbids, especially when such an individual seeks a key position in the country.

The case was dismissed on Monday, November 21, by the Sekondi High Court, presided over by Justice Dr. Richmond Osei Hwere, on the grounds that the MP was eligible to contest because she lost her Ivorian citizenship at the same time she acquired her Ghanaian citizenship.

When asked about her American citizenship, the MP denied having it.
