The neglected business education by Ghana Education Service

JUN 26, 2022 LISTEN

Education as the sloganeers always say is the key to success which many believe has currently been turning up and seems like a scam to many students and graduates across the country.

It's sometimes frustrating seeing all the resilience the government of the day has been putting across in some particular sectors of education with the neglect of certain departments. I mean the business department, especially, at the pre-tertiary level.

We can all recall how the government have been echoing in the minds of graduates daily to venture into entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship, according to Merriam-webster dictionary is "one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise". There is no single graduate from the business department who has not studied entrepreneurship, yet we can not use the opportunity presented by the President and the Education Ministry to revamp and structure the business department if the need be for the country's development.

I do not want to believe we still have Teachers and Heads of Departments in the business department at the SHS level anymore. I am also told Ghana Association of Business Education Teachers (GABET) is still in existence, really! If this is true, what is their relevance to the department? Does it mean you totally lost your vision for forming the association?

I may sound so emotional but I vehemently believe other persons who also became who they are today through the department will appreciate my feelings for the collapsing department.

It was extremely shocking when the whole engine, Ghana Education Service (GES) on the 21st June, 2022 released a statement on Study Leave with Pay 2022, without featuring at least a single business department subject teacher.

GES, per your release, are you telling us that the business department is no more relevant? Also, are you telling us that a Musician is far better than the Secretary, Accountant and Internal Auditor in your office?

Unless someone convinces me that we do not have persons with business background at the office of the Presidency, Parliament, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry Information, Ministry of Finance, Controller and Accountant General's Department, Hospitals, Security sector and all the other ministries and government agencies in the country.

Almost every sector of the economy, be it the formal or informal sector requires someone with business background to enable it function properly, and so in the light of all these great opportunities for the business department, why should the Teachers and HoDs continue to keep quiet when they have been totally neglected by GES?

Or you do not know the relevance of the subjects you are teaching? Should the general public conclude it as such?

The Executives of GABET, I want to use this opportunity to humbly call on you to wake up and fight for the department, for you have slept so long.

I also want to humbly call on the Minister of Education, GES and the unperturbed Heads of Department and teachers of the business education at the Pre tertiary level to consider all legitimate possible means to revamp and if need be restructure the department for the country needs a lot from the business department.

Though I am not a teacher, I feel the pain because I am simply who I am today through the department.

Note, if we are willing to spend less to revamp the collapsing department today, more will definitely be spent tomorrow to restart it from the scratch.

Thank You.
