Agriculture The high cost of foodstuff in Ghana caused by external factors; but no shortage — Agric Minister
JUN 21, 2022 LISTEN

The Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Afriyie Akoto has attributed the high cost of foodstuffs to external factors.

He blames the situation on the constant fuel hikes.

According to him, aside the high cost, there is no scarcity of foodstuff as speculated.

Speaking on Joy News’ “PM Express” on June 20 he stated that every year, people keep saying that there will be food shortage but that has never happened.

According to him, the high cost of foodstuff cannot be equated to food scarcity in the country.

“Every year they say the same thing and it never happens. That’s why I am saying that in the enclave of Techiman, in the markets we saw something like 25,000 metric tons of maize from last year’s harvest so what are they talking about. The high cost of food is because of external factors. The trebling of petrol which means that moving the food to the market more than triples the cost of production on the farm so if you used to do GHS120 per bag and now you are doing GHS400 per bag you don’t expect that the farmer will price it the same as before so all these are factors outside the domain which are having an impact. It doesn’t mean that the food is not there,” he explained.
