All structures on waterways to be pulled down — Korle Klottey MCE

As part of efforts to prevent flooding, the Municipal Chief Executive ( MCE) for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly ( KoKMA) , Hon. Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, has hinted on moves by the Assembly to pull down all buildings constructed on waterways.

The seventh anniversary of the June 3 twin disaster has been marked with an appeal to residents of Korle Klottey and Ghana at large to desist from throwing rubbish into gutters.

Residents and building contractors were also cautioned to desist from building their homes and offices on water ways in order to curb disasters.

During a short but solemn ceremony at Adabraka, the venue of the infamous disaster that claimed 154 lives and properties in June 2015, participants pledged to ensure that never again should such a thing occur again.

In a speech read on his behalf , the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly ( KoKMA) Municipal Chief Executive, hon. Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, pleaded with Ghanaians to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste and building on water ways.

The issue of flooding in Accra, according to the KoKMA MCE has been age-old worrying phenomenon which require the collective efforts of stakeholders to bring it to an end.

” We are going to pull down all those structures built on water ways within the Municipality," he stated.

Hon. Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah disclosed that the Assembly is putting out measures in tackling the problem with sensitisation forum, relocation of structures and frequent dredging and desilting of drains.

The KoKMA Mayor further announced that government through the Works and Housing Ministry has managed to get the respective Assemblies to work more closely together by providing technical knowledge and resources under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project ( GARID).

The GARID Project, the MCE noted is to improve flood risk and solid waste management in the Odaw River Basin as well as improving access to basic infrastructure and services in the targeted flood prone low income communities in the Greater Accra Region.

To that end , hon. Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah pointed out that the NPP government is very committed to finding solutions to the sanitation challenges bedevilling the Municipality and Ghana at large with regards to the construction of efficient drainage systems to absorb the large volumes of water during torrential rains.

In a speech read on his behalf by Rev. Odei, the KoKMA Director for the National Disaster and Management Organisation ( NADMO) , the MCE used the opportunity to expressed his heartfelt condolences to families of the June 3 disaster.

Victims of the disaster appealed to the government through the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, the National Petroleum Authority ( NPA) and the Ghana Oil Company ( GOIL) to come to their aid.

According to them many of their colleagues who survived the disaster are still suffering from various ailments, deformities and have never received any assistance since the incident occurred seven years ago.
