Five clubs show interest in "Tour du Ghana"

Accra, Oct. 4, GNA - Four cycling clubs have so far registered with the Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) to participate in the 2004 Cycling Competition dubbed "Tour du Ghana". The clubs are City Migro, Nippon, River Park and All Stars cycling clubs, all based in Accra.

Mr Francis Kpesenu, General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) told the GNA Sports that the Association is expecting more applications from clubs by the close of the week since most of them have expressed interest in participating in the annual event. According to Mr Kpesenu the association has received confirmation from Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Cote d' Ivoire to participate in the tour and they are expected to arrive by the end of the week for the competition.

Mr Kpesenu said a press briefing would be organised on Wednesday, October 6, by the GCA to outline preparations for the One-Week event. The 2,034 kilometer race will start at Cape Coast with Mr Isaac Edumadze, Central Regional Minister firing the gun for its commencement. The cyclists are expected to ride through Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman and Koforidua to complete at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 17.

The actual distance of the competition would cover a total of 690 kilometers with a transfer distance of 1,344 kilometers. Pepsi Ghana Limited, Ghana Telecom, Pens and Plastics, Novotel, Wienco Fertiliser Company, Irani Brothers and Gemini Life Insurance Company (GLICO) are the official sponsors of the event.
