Koforidua, March 14, GNA - The Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre (Dr) Oti Boateng on Saturday joined members of the Koforidua Health Walk Club for about 30 minutes physical exercise as part of activities to mark the inauguration of the club. The Health Walk was initiated by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the New Juaben Municipality some two years ago to encourage people especially the elderly, top executive personnel in the Municipality and heads of departments.
The Club aims at cultivating the habit of walking among the people as a form of regular exercise to help reduce diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes and others in the society.
The initiative received a good patronage from the people and that resulted in the formation of the permanent club that meets once a month to walk through the principal streets of the Municipality. Nana Kwasi-Boateng, the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive in his inaugural address said the country needs healthy people to support it's developmental efforts and one of the ways of keeping the society healthy is through mobilising of the people to participate in mass exercises like the aims of the club.
He therefore called on the people in the Municipality to join the club to stay healthy to support the efforts of Government. Nana Agyei-Boateng said government initiated the district wide health insurance schemes because it places priority on the health of the people and therefore appealed to the people to join the New Juaben Mutual Health Insurance Scheme (NJMHIS) to provide security for themselves when they fall sick.
He said under the NJMHIS, only parents and young persons of 18 years and above would be required to pay the premium while children would be exempted but would enjoy the facility once their parents join the scheme and pay their premium.
The Eastern Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Ebenezer Appiah Denkyirah called on the members of the Club to encourage their spouses and children to join the club so that the whole family would benefit from the walk.
