Adopt conciliatory approach to end the impasse — Ablakwa to Majority

Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said the majority side should adopt a conciliatory approach in order to end the current impasse in the Legislative assembly.

He described majority’s statement of having a numerical advantage as a wild goose chase

A 137 minority side on the night of Friday November 26, threw away the budget for the 2022 fiscal year.

The majority had walked out from a hung parliament whiles debate for adoption and implementation of the budget was ongoing, that was the first time a majority side had staged a walkout in the Fourth Republic.

Among the things the minority side had cited for the rejection of the 2022 budget are the introduction of the E-Levy; described by the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in his tweet, on Friday night as “regressive and obnoxious.”

The apparent neglect of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project is also visible in the concerns of the minority “A new budget which makes provision for phase 2 of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project to cater for the over 4,000 victims of recent destructive tidal waves. How can any budget worth its name fail to address such a major disaster?” Okudzeto quizzed in a tweet.

“At the proceedings before public business more than 270 Members of Parliament were in the chamber who had signed the attendants sheet and who participated in the proceedings and in the budget approval processes. If at some point you walk out from your own budget, so it wasn’t as though they didn’t show up for work,” he told Media General’s Evans-Nkum.

He said the current impasse can only end with a conciliatory approach “I believe at this point cool heads must prevail and that both sides must come together. entrenched positions, refusing to listen to the people and thinking that because you have a one member majority so you can have your way clearly that have shown not to be the progressive path” he stressed.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also advised there should be a broader consultation on the E-levy before the next sitting.

Parliament is expected to reconvene on Tuesday November 30, to continue the debate on the 2022 budget.
