Let's applaud Agric Minister for drastic reduction in food prices — NPP Ladies to critics
21.11.2021 LISTEN

A group calling itself ‘Active Ladies of NPP’ has refuted claims of impending foodstuff hikes by General Secretary of Ghana Agricultural Union, Mr. Kareweh.

Describing the claim as “fallacious”, the group giving reasons to refute the claims indicated that there has been a good rainy season in 2021, and despite the global shortage of fertilizer, farmers still had access to adequate fertilizers.

According to the group, in view of some interactions between the Minister of Agriculture and some farmers, there have been high hopes of bountiful harvest in 2021.

In a statement copied to ModernGhana News on Friday, the group challenged General Secretary of Ghana Agricultural Union to “come clearer with you claims or let us know if you are being used.”

The statement added, “Claims by the General Secretary of Ghana Agricultural Union that, there will be hikes in food prices is fallacious. These claims do not hold any substantial proof because there has been a good rainy season, and despite the global shortage of fertilizer, farmers have still had access to adequate fertilizers.

“By the noble, intelligence and competent traits of the Agricultural Minister, the Ministry of food and Agriculture (MoFA) is currently not only the backbone of Ghana’s economy but is as well serving as the food basket of entire Africa.”

Many Ghanaians have complained about soaring prices of foodstuff in the country. Traders and consumers alike have expressed fears that, if nothing is done about it, it would be very difficult for citizens to feed their families during Christmas.

Their calls were deepened by the repetition of some media reports that prices of foodstuff had become too costly.

But the pro-NPP all females group disagrees with their assertions, challenging any group to do proper research and stop the propaganda.

The Active Ladies insist that there have rather been a reduction of prices in food produce across the country.

“As the statistics has shown, prices of food items have reduced drastically regardless of the early stages of harvest that we are in. In Tamale, price of maize has reduced from Gh340-Gh200 for 100kg as well as soya beans reducing from Gh450-Gh300 for 100kg as well.”

“In Asante Akyem Agogo, a truck of plantain which used to cost 6,000 for a big truck from the farmers now cost 4000gh, and, is still expected to come down even more.

According to Global Food Security Index (GFSI), the group noted, Ghana is ranked fourth (4rd) in Africa and first (1st) in West Africa in terms of the Agricultural sector, urging critics to applaud the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto “instead of using propaganda to distort his good works.”

ACTIVE LADIES APPLAUD DR. AKOTO FOR THE REDUCTION IN PRICES OF FARM PRODUCE

Food has always been a necessity for our livelihood which the His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration championed by Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has made it a core mandate to uphold the integrity of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. By the noble, intelligence and competent traits of the Agricultural Minister, the Ministry of food and Agriculture (MoFA) is currently not only the backbone of Ghana’s economy but is as well serving as the food basket of the entire Africa. According to Global Food Security Index (GFSI), Ghana is ranked fourth (4rd) in Africa and first (1st) in West Africa in terms of the Agricultural sector.

As the statistics has shown, prices of food items have reduced drastically regardless of the early stages of harvest that we are in. In Tamale, price of maize has reduced from Gh340-Gh200 for 100kg as well as soya beans reducing from Gh450-Gh300 for 100kg as well. In Asante Akyem Agogo, a truck of plantain which used to cost 6,000 for a big truck from the farmers now cost 4000gh, and, is still expected to come down even more. Instead of pushing propaganda to distort the good works of Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, it is better for us to channel all such efforts into applauding him for the feats he has achieved at the ministry, thus far. In fact, According to Global Food Security Index (GFSI), Ghana is ranked third (3rd) in Africa and first (1st) in West Africa in terms of Agricultural products Affordability.

Claims by the General Secretary of Ghana Agricultural Union that, there will be hikes in food prices is fallacious. These claims do not hold any substantial proof because there has been a good rainy season, and despite the global shortage of fertilizer, farmers have still had access to adequate fertilizers. More so, according to the interactions farmers had with the workaholic minister, they are very positive and hopeful of a bountiful harvest. So Mr. Kareweh, please come clearer with your claims or let us know if you are being used for propaganda purposes.

Some of the media houses are doing a very great work which needs recognition but the works of some are still below the belt and they ought to invest much into research if they are not fixated on propaganda. Researching into issues before putting them out there in the public must be done with all the accurateness.

Media General should revisit this and similar stories and do the needful because these inaccurate falsehoods don’t only dent the integrity of Media General but the industrious media stations who put all efforts into useful researches before putting issues in the public domain.

Ghana is not a banana republic that stories can be concocted and allowed to fester. Upholding journalism ethics should be at the centre of every media outlet. It is then preposterous for a media outlet to throw these ethics to the dogs and go after their parochial interest. It is not just for the sake of it that you are called the fourth estate of the country.

The onus therefore lies on Media General and the other media houses plying same agenda to do proper research going forward to redeem their respective sinking images.
