The KN Owusu Memorial Invitational Tournament pushed-off Tuesday afternoon on a cracking note. Less fancied Brong Ahafo Region set the tone for an afternoon of brilliant hockey with a 3-0 thrashing of much fancied Afahye kingpins, Central Region. The game started on a rather cautious note with Brong Ahafo surprising the packed crowd with some beautiful exchanges. Indeed, their efforts were rewarded in the 26th minute when Emmanuel Amoah scored from a midfield build-up. The scoreline stayed that way till the 63rd minute when Kwadwo Kyere found the net from open play. He outrun the defense in the 68th minute to seal the doom of Central Region with an emphatic 3-0 scoreline.
After the game, an elated coach David Osei went straight to the phone to call a couple of Sunyani radio stations to break the news via a live transmission to their numerous fans. He beamed with smiles and intimated that this was just the beginning of showdown to wrestle the coveted trophy.
The opening ceremony of the Tournament was conducted by the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Joe Aggrey. The ceremony was attended by the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) Dr. E. Owusu Ansah, the widow of the late KN Owusu, Mrs. Mary Owusu, representatives of the OAA 1960 Year group, and members of the executive of the GHA.
In his address, the Honourable Deputy Minister paid tribute to the memory of the late KN Owusu and called on all hockey lovers and enthusiasts to support the growth of the game to keep the memory of KN alive. This he believed will go a long way to honour KN for all that he did for the game of hockey both as a player and official. He was confident that the ability of the GHA to sustain the event would go a long way to reassure all those who are trying to emulate the glorious example set by KN Owusu and others that they won’t be forgotten as soon as they leave this world. He stated emphatically that the game of hockey does not forget its heroes and heroines.
The vice-chairman of the GHA thanked the regions for accepting to participate in this important event and indicated the preparedness of the Association to develop hockey throughout the country starting 2003.
In the second match of the day, highly fancied Greater Accra II deflated the ego of Ashanti Region with an emphatic 5-0 thrashing courtesy 3 strikes from Alex ‘Budu’ Amanquanor, a penalty corner strike by captain Jacob Sowah and a spectacular open play goal by David ‘Nene’ Chablah. The Ashanti lads held their opponents in check in the first half conceding only 2 goals but could not stand the onslaught of the Accra boys who played with a lot of confidence due to their familiarity in playing on the artificial surface.
The second day of competition will see Eastern attempt to derail the possibility of a Greater Accra dominance when they square up with Greater Accra (II) team at 2:00pm. Ms. Agatha Hagan and Mr. George Mensah will be in charge of the match while Daniel Lomotey, George Banson and Mrs. Paulina Mensah take charge of the technical table. In the second match, Central will face the wrath of Greater Accra (I) at 4:00pm. Kingsley Tenkorang and Richard Kudolo will be in charge of procedings.
