The Western North National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch has accused President Akufo-Addo of refusing to consider some persons for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) positions for not belonging to his preferred tribe.

According to a press release from the Regional Communication Officer Sam Jerome, his outfit is reliably informed that tribal sentiments and affiliation played a major role in the selection of persons to the position of MDCE in the region.

He stressed that it is a very worrying trend which ought not to be countenance in Ghana’s democratic system of governance.

“We have reliably been informed that some persons were denied nomination because of their tribal origin which indeed is very unconstitutional and unacceptable and must be discouraged.

“We have been told by some persons in the NPP party particularly in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality that, Mr. Benjamin Oppong was denied because of his tribal origin. In as much as we find this difficult to comprehend, we are made to believe due to previous experience,” the released signed by Sam Jerome has alleged.

Expressing disappointment, the NDC Western North Communications Officer has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region to join forces to fight tribal politics.

“We are by this release calling on all disgruntled members of the NPP to join forces with the NDC to deal with this tribal epidemic in our politics once and for all. This act I must say has the potential of thwarting and stagnating our development as a region and again causing disunity amongst us,” the release adds.

WESTERN NORTH COMMUNICATION - NDC*

THE SEEMING TRIBAL POLITICS IN THE SELECTION OF MDCES IN WESTERN NORTH PARTICULARLY THE CASE OF SEFWI WIAWSO MUNICIPALITY IS WORRYING

It has come to the attention of the Western North NDC the process leading to the nomination of some persons to the position as MDCE in the region.

We are reliably informed that tribal sentiments and affiliation played a major role in the selection of persons to the position of MDCE in the region. This indeed is a very worrying trend which ought not to be countenance in our democratic system of governance.

We have reliably been informed that some persons were denied nomination because of their tribal origin which indeed is very unconstitutional and unacceptable and must be discouraged. We have been told by some persons in the NPP party particularly in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality that, Mr Benjamin Oppong was denied because of his tribal origin. In as much as we find this difficult to comprehend, we are made to believe due to previous experience.

Not too long ago, Mr Martin Bonye who used to be a Constituency Youth Organiser of the NPP in Sefwi Wiawso some time past was heavily criticized over his decision to contest as Parliamentary Candidate based on his tribal origin. Very distasteful wordings were used against his person which is on records anyway. This continuing act in the NPP is highly condemnable.

It is instructive to note that article 243 of the 1992 Constitution posits that, ‘there shall be a District Chief Executive for every district who shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of not less than two-thirds of majority of members of the Assembly present and voting at meeting’ Per this article, the President needs not consult anyone prior to the nomination or appointment of such persons. This article speaks volume and we strongly believe that the spirt behind it is to promote oneness and unity irrespective of one’s ethnicity or tribal origin.

It is all over that tribalism was at play in the selection of these MDCEs though we have no qualms with the competencies of such nominees.

We are by this release calling on all disgruntled members of the NPP to join forces with the NDC to deal with this tribal epidemic in our politics once and for all. This act I must say has the potential of thwarting and stagnating our development as a region and again causing disunity amongst us.

We are however, calling on all Assembly members to help confirm the nominees to fast track the already delayed development we require as a region.

We wish to congratulate all nominees and wish them well.
