Contractors won’t be paid if Old Ashongman-Abokobi road is not fixed – Roads Ministry warns

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has vowed to ensure that portions of the damaged 2.9km road from the Ahmadiyya Junction to Abokobi is fixed.

A section of the road which was completed in February 2021 has started developing potholes.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Ahmed Nasir Yartey, said contractors had been tasked to return to the site to fix the damaged portions of the road.

He pointed out that contractors will not be paid for previous work done until the damaged portions of the road are fixed.

“I can assure you that the contractors will not be paid a dime if they fail to fix the road to the standard specification. Until that is done, they will not be paid a dime of their money. That assurance I can give.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Isaac Agyei Kwakye, says the entire project is expected to be completed within two years.

“The contractor will come back to the site and where we have potholes, he will patch them up and finally fill the holes. Within two years, we should be able to complete this project.”

Residents and motorists in the area have consistently expressed concerns over the poor state of the road.

In 2019, the Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo, cut sod for construction work on the project to begin.

Other road projects that are either being rehabilitated or at various stages of completion in the constituency include the Taifa-Burkina road, Atomic-Roundabout-Kwabenya- Abuom road, asphalting of Kwabenya-Abuom-Ashongman Estate road, and Musuku-Roundabout road among others.
