NDC Changing leadership of Minority in Parliament would be devastating – Benjamin Kunbuor
APR 21, 2021 LISTEN

A member of the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor, has warned against plans to change the leadership of the Minority in Parliament.

In an interview on Citi TV's Face to Face, the one-time Majority Leader said any attempt to forcefully change the current Minority leadership will be “devastating” for the NDC in Parliament.

The Minority in Parliament had been lambasted by supporters of the NDC following the approval of some ministerial nominees who had been blacklisted by the leadership of the party.

This caused some NDC executives to accuse the Minority leadership of betraying their party.

This was followed by some calls for changes in the leadership of the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

These are calls Mr. Kunbuor has cautioned against.

“Having been in that House, the dynamics in Parliament are completely different. There is a Parliamentary system and body language that takes place. Until you have been a Member of Parliament, you will always misinterpret it,” he explained.

Mr. Kunbuor also said such a move will cause splits within the Minority Caucus.

Dr. Kunbuor also believes John Mahama should be given another chance to lead the NDC into an election.

“When we give a leader the flak for things that go wrong, we should also be charitable enough to give him the credit when things go well.”

He also fears choosing a new flagbearer could set a bad precedent.

“When you set a precedent of a flagbearer just doing one term, and you crowd him out, it also becomes institutionalised.”
