NDC Allocate funds to curb streetism in Accra – NDC's Wonder Madilo to govt
APR 20, 2021 LISTEN

A member of the National Communications Team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wonder Madilo has called on the government to allocate some resources to fight the growing streetism in the country.

Mr. Madilo believes such a move will help curb the menace.

Some streets in Accra like Madina, Osu, Ridge, Achimota and Lapaz, among others, are inundated with child beggars, most of whom are believed to be nationals of other West African countries.

The Accra Police Command had claimed that these children are brought into Ghana from neighbouring countries by some Ghanaians and engaged in “commercial begging.”

The Director of Operations at the Accra Police Command, ACP Kwesi Ofori in a Citi News interview assured Ghanaians that his outfit is determined to flush out these miscreants.

“At the moment, you might have seen a lot of children from other West African countries on our streets. There are contractors who bring [them to Ghana] and place the children at vantage points and supervise them to beg. The Accra Regional Police Command will be looking into that.”

“The street is littered with children. Sooner or later, we will be descending on the contractors who go to neighbouring countries to bring the children, collect the money and in the end benefit”, he added.

But Mr. Madilo insists government must lead the fight and support it with adequate resources.

“The government has to commit a certain quota of its resources towards the eradication of this streetism in the country, Accra especially. We don't even have households managed by government or NGO's that can take these guys, temporarily work out the modalities on which they came over and how their lives can be made better.”

He made the call on Citi TV‘s Breakfast Daily programme on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.
