Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) under the umbrella of the Techiman Local Accountability Network has received training on the use of monitoring and procurement data collection tool.

The training is to equip the organizations with knowledge to use the tool for the disclosure of public procurement data, the monitoring tool would also be used to collect procurement data from relevant entities such as the hospitals, Municipal and District Assemblies among others to promote transparency and accountability.

At a day training workshop organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Campaign (GACC) with funding support from the Hewlett Foundation brought together 20 members from the various CSO’s in the area and equipped them with the skill in the use of the tool on Monday at Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital.

The monitoring and data collection tool include online portals and manual reporting forms and would be used by the reporter to record and report any corrupt activities on community development projects to GACC.

Mr. Michael Adisu Monitoring and Evaluation officer at the GACC noted that the move would empower and allow the citizenry to participate effectively in demanding accountability from the duty bearer.

In a presentation, Mr. Adisu indicated that the programme was geared at reducing corruption, stating that there has been less disclosure of procurement information, such as how contracts and other developmental projects area procured.

Touching on issues including procurement methods, stages of procurement among other things, Mr Adisu explained that this would promote data disclosure and provide the platform for effective citizenry participation in their community development.

Mr. Cletus Avane Procurement officer at the Techiman Municipal Assembly noted that following the right procurement procedure would aid to fight corruption and speed up national development.

Mr. Avane empowered committee members to monitor and supervise developmental projects at their various communities as it was their mandate to do so, indicating that they have the right to report any contractor who may not use the right tools or materials for a project and may confirm to shoddy work.

Mr. Mustapha Maison Yeboah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to the Center for Posterity Interest Organization (COPIO) working to improve accountability in institutions championed the need for CSO’s to join the crusade in fighting corruption and bringing the duty bearer to bear accountability.

He urged the participants to make good use of the skill acquired and demand accountability from the duty bearer as it was their duty to serve the people and not the people serving them.
