Fix 'dumsor' or Twitter will ditch Ghana for Togo

Civil Society Group, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has warned that government should fix the recent power outages [dumsor] or Twitter will change its decision to host its African headquarters in Ghana after six months of establishment.

On Monday, April 13, Modernghana News reported that officials of the giant social media network have selected Ghana out of all other countries on the African continent to host its base.

Ghanaian officials subsequently followed up with posts of jubilation.

While ASEPA understands the joy, the group insists “the manner in which it is being celebrated is quite grotesque especially when government seems to have forgotten that the nation is in a dire power crisis which threatens this great opportunity from the global giant.”

Uncertain whether the power outages issues have been settled, ASEPA has cautioned government to get things in order if it wants Twitter to stay when the base is officially established.

“If the current power situation continues for the next six months it would be almost unprofitable and unwise for them to continue the operations of their continental office here in Ghana.

“They would be left with no choice than to relocate to neighboring Togo, Gabon, Rwanda or South Africa where they would have a sustainable power supply for their operations without any dire effect on their operation cost,” parts of a press release from ASEPA signed by Executive Director Mensah Thompson has said.

Government seem to be in quite a joyous mood since yesterday after Twitter announced that it has settled on Ghana as the location for its continental office.

Even though we believe the news is great, the manner in which it is being celebrated is quite grotesque especially when government seem to have forgotten that the nation is in a dire power crisis which threaten this great opportunity from the Global giant.

What is the essence of Twitter having their continental office in Ghana when Ghanaians can’t have electricity to charge their phones to even use the app?

Apart from that Twitter’s operations could be hampered by the current power situation thereby forcing them to rely on fuel consuming power plants or generators which would make their cost of operations way higher than expected.

If the current power situation continues for the next six months it would be almost unprofitable and unwise for them to continue the operations of their continental office here in Ghana.

They would be left with no choice than to relocate to neighboring Togo, Gabon, Rwanda or South Africa where they would have a sustainable power supply for their operations without any dire effect on their operation cost.

So our advice to Government, enough of the funfair, get down to work, fix the power problem else Twitter will dump you in less than six months.
