General News Iona Reine calls for responsible use of water to mark World Water Day
MAR 22, 2021 LISTEN

Water is life. Who can live without water and for how long?

We still have millions of people who don't have access to potable water. Water bodies face pollution with hard metals and chemicals such as mercury used in mining.

The world is said to experience serious water challenges if we don't consider pragmatic and sustainable measures to curtail the global threat.

How do you feel when water doesn't flow through the taps?

Climate change with its impact could make things worse.

What can we do?

  • fix your faulty leaking taps
  • add your voice against illegal mining and illegal logging
  • use water efficient systems such as modern water closet which uses less water.
  • save water while brushing your teeth and also when under shower

Miss Mercy Onuawonto Sam affectionately known as iOna Reine has added her voice against galamsey and illegal logging of trees. She expressed these during a discussion on the theme: *Valuing Water* with AbibiNsroma Foundation, a non governmental organisation in Tema.

The songstress emphasised that everything about our everyday life needs water, from the point of child birth to adulthood, in food preparation, clothing, shelter and in the healthcare delivery system.

iOna said that music could be a powerful influence in educating people to use water wisely and to help build positive mindset in society.

"I call on all to value water and to remain responsible for its use. Ability to afford water should not guarantee one to be wasteful with it", said iOna Reine.

Iona told Mr Bob Amiteye, Coordinator of the AbibiNsroma Foundation that as a healthcare professional she would continue the "value water"
