The Atiwa West District NCCE with support from the European Union organized a parliamentary debate for parliamentary candidates in the district.

Mr. Clement Donkor, the NCCE director for the district stated that the debate was a peaceful way for electorates to listen to what their parliamentary candidates had to offer and give the platform for the electorates to ask questions and present their area of needs. He noted that democracy is without violence and welcomes the freedom of speech and rights of others.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Opoku Yamoah said that it was possible for elections to run without violence and a program like the parliamentary debate gives the platform for candidates to communicate their policies and answer questions from their electorates without mishaps. He admonished that, everyone has a role to play in maintaining peace before, during, and after elections and peace is a collective responsibility.

In the opening remarks of Mr. Johnson Amo Anom, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Atiwa West district, commended the Member of Parliament Hon. Amoako Atta for the commencement of the construction of roads within the district but quickly added that it was his duty and responsibility to ensure that the roads were constructed not in few areas but throughout the district.

He complained that since the Atiwa district was created 14 years ago and subsequently the Atiwa West district which was formed about 4 years ago, the district has not been given its share of principal offices.

He expressed his utmost dissatisfaction on how there are no Fire service, Forestry department, NHIS office, Banks, Hospital, and Electricity Company of Ghana Offices in the district.

He explained that there are more forest reserves in the Atiwa West district than its surrounding districts but they lacked a forestry department.

He highlighted the discomfort in assessing commercial bank and the NHIS in Anyinam, the Electricity office in Tafo.

On NDC parliamentary candidates policy for Education, He described the educational system in the country to be based on theoretical and not more focused on hands-on and practically driven. He said that his presence in parliament when given the nod will ensure that the educational system is transformed to be more practical.

Mr. Anom advanced on this policy to promise that he will ensure that, the Akrofufu community center was going to be brought back to build professionals and vocational capacity of the youth in the district. Mr. Johnson Amo Anom added that apart from improving the condition of schools in the district, He was going to set up an award scheme to honor teachers who work in deprived areas in the district.

On Mr. Johnson Amo Anom’s policy for the youth and employment, he promised the construction of a labor office to ensure that the youth is not left out on employment.

He stated that microfinance will also be set up to support just women so that they can support their children and their families.

He promised to help restructure mining in the district and referred to the policy of John Dramani Mahama to support the Okada business in the country as a great way of providing jobs for the youth.

He pledged his support for the health sector seeing to it that projects that have been commissioned will be completed.

He also said that people living with disability in the district were going to be treated fairly and He would ensure that they get their share of the common fund. He mentioned that the progress of the district partly dwells on resolving issues with the traditional leadership of the district and he was going to ensure that there is peace on that subject.

Mr Renoylds Antwi Ayim, the LPG parliamentary candidate for the district said that he was a young man and unlike Member of Parliaments the district has seen, he was not going to be distant from the district and its problems when he is given the opportunity to serve as an MP.

He explained that an MP who is not far from the district understands the problems and better take initiatives that will develop the district.

Mr. Ayim expressed worry that the district does not have a lot of schools and promised to help bring more educational institutions to the district. He promised a sports stadium that was going to help sportsmen with talents to improve on them.

On his policy on education, he reiterated that the theoretical approach to education is inhibiting talents just because they can not get good grades.

Mr. Ayim said that he believed in education but he also understands people with raw talents that can be exploited well informally.

He stated that he will set up scholarships schemes for students and improve the ICT situation in the district. He promised to support teachers in the district and motivate teachers to give their best.

Mr. Ayim also promised to use part of the MPs common fund to establish a library to help students in the district to supplement books that are provided by the government.

Mr. Ayimsaid that the youth in the district deserved better and creating jobs is a sure way of investing in their potentials. According to Mr. Ayim, Mining and farming which is the main occupation of most of the electorates needed to be reformed and invested in.

On the LPG parliamentary candidates' policy on health, he expressed dissatisfaction with the health delivery in the district. He promised to facilitate the building of a modern hospital to improve the health delivery system in the district.

He was concerned with the poor road network in many areas of the district and mentioned that it was his goal to ensure that a good network is provided within the district when he is elected into office as an MP.

Disabled participants had the opportunity to present their problems and pleaded with the aspiring MPs to include them in their plans. Other members asked why the Member of Parliament was not present at the parliamentary debate.

Rev. Stephen Dwamena Kwarteng, the moderator commended the parliamentary aspirants for their comportment throughout the debate.
