Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has slammed former President John Dramani Mahama for taking credit for the Free SHS programme.

He said the erstwhile National Democratic Congress government created over 40 adverts in an attempt to destroy the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy promise by the New Patriotic Party.

He made these comments on the back of claims by former President John Dramani Mahama that he was the first to start the free SHS policy.

John Mahama who is also the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress told residents of the Upper East Region during his recent campaign tour that he started the free SHS policy before Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP took over governance of the state.

But Speaking at the Nation Building Updates, Mr. Bawumia stated that the NDC had initially tried all means to stop the implementation of the policy in the country.

“They even went to the Supreme Court to stop free SHS. They ran over 40 adverts against free SHS. Today the NDC and their flagbearer are looking at us and saying that they started free SHS.”

“Are they confused or do they think we have short memories? Their prediction of doom for free SHS has not materialized. The results have shown that quality has not been comprised,” he added.

There’s been a heated debate in Ghana following John Mahama’s claim.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST), Peter Anti has described as misplaced, the ongoing debate over who introduced the Free Senior High School Policy.
