The heads of social media giants Facebook and Twitter defended their efforts to combat election misinformation during a US Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said his company has applied labels to more than 300,000 tweets in the two weeks around the US election.

"We focused on addressing attempts to undermine civic integrity, providing informative context, and product changes to encourage greater consideration," Dorsey said.

Mark Zuckerberg applauded Facebook for taking the "unprecedented step" of promoting accurate voting information at the top of users' news feeds.

The heated Senate hearing highlighted the sharp divide between lawmakers over online misinformation.

Republicans blasted the social media giants for a perceived censorship of conservative views, while Democrats argued they were not doing enough to combat misinformation, particularly from President Donald Trump.

Trump himself has been the chief promoter of false claims that the presidential election saw wide-spread voter fraud and was rigged against him.
