The Minister of Harbours and Railways, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi has expressed shock and dismay at the demolition exercise carried out at the Kantamanto market area over the weekend by Bremark Ventures.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi said, “The exercise, which was carried out without the consent and approval of the Ministry responsible for Railways, is a clear and deliberate violation of a restraining order of a court by Bremark Ventures.”

A statement signed by Director of Human Resources, Ms. Cecilia Erzuah, said the Ministry has, and through the Ghana Railways Company Limited filed a motion last Wednesday, September 13, 2006 freezing all action on the land in question.

It said, “The Ministry has incontrovertible proof that Bremark Ventures were served with a copy of the motion restraining it from undertaking the demolition exercise.

“The Ministry therefore, wishes to assure the general public and those affected by the illegal demolition exercise that everything is being done to resolve the problems through the courts.”

The statement said, “In the same vein, the Ministry wishes to express it determination to investigate the circumstances leading to the leasing of the land to Bremark Ventures and the subsequent demolition exercise undertaken by the company.”

It said “the Ministry was determined to take up the issue of compensation for the affected victims through the courts.
