Accra, Aug. 3, GNA - The Majority Caucus in Parliament on Thursday congratulated President John Agyekum Kufuor for his distinguished leadership style that led to the country benefiting from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
A statement Mr K. Osei-Prempeh, New Patriotic Party (NPP) member for Nsuta-Kwamang, signed on behalf of the Caucus described the signing of the MCA Compact Agreement as a positive landmark in the history of Ghana saying; "it is an event worth savouring by all Ghanaians and lovers of Ghana".
It said the Compact was also a feather in the cap of the NPP Government "whose enlightened leadership, prudent management of the economy and good governance record has brought such immense benefits to this country.
"It goes without saying that the policies adopted by this Government, both economic and political, have not gone unnoticed by the outside world, which is prepared to reward Ghana for that." The statement recounted the condemnation that characterized Government's decision to opt for the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative saying; 93hell broke loose with detractors rubbishing the move".
The Caucus said the results had been the cancellation of the debts and freeing of several millions of dollars, which would have been channelled into debt servicing.
It noted that the MCA package followed the cancellation of the country's debt and indicated the prudent policies of government and unparalleled democratic credentials of the NPP administration. The statement said it was gratifying to hear Ms Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State, recognizing President Kufuor's leadership style and describing him as one of the best leaders of a new Africa. The Caucus said this was the time to celebrate an achievement of the Government but not to detract from it.
It criticised some members of the opposition it accused of claiming that the US Government had insisted that members from the opposition should be present at the signing ceremony.
The Caucus also commended Parliament for its support and Civil Servants and the technical men, whose excellent job made Ghana's proposal outstanding for the realization of the goal.
It urged Ghanaians to continue to support the Government to take the country out of economic darkness.
