General Eskine Caution Against Withdrawal Of Ghanaian Soldiers From Lebanon

Some sections of the Ghanaian public are demanding immediate withdrawal of Ghanaian Soldiers and other United Nations (UN) troops from the Middle East, after a precision guided missile hit the UN post in Lebanon, killing four peacekeepers.

Following the death of the four UN peacekeepers, as a result of attacks by Israeli troops, concerns have once more hit alarming heights about the safety of Ghanaian UN peace keepers in Lebanon.

CITI NEWS has gathered that news about the death of the four UN peacekeepers, has sparked renewed fears among families and relatives of Ghanaian soldiers in the troubled region who appear convinced that their loved ones are in grave danger; hence the need to withdraw them before the unexpected happens.

However, the a former commander of the United Nations Force in Lebanon, General Emmanuel Eskine, has advised against the idea of withdrawing the UN forces in these trying times.

General Eskine, the first ever Commander of United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL), told CITI NEWS that a withdrawal of the UN force would rather worsen the situation in Lebanon.

He however advised that history should be the guiding principle in any decision that the UN body would arrive at.

General Eskine insisted that the Rwandan situation, where the UN withdrew only for the massacre to reign supreme should not be repeated.

On proposals for peace in the Middle East, General Eskine indicated that until the core of the problem is handled effectively, the region would continue to experience protracted instability.
