SOME criminals specialize in stealing motorbikes and cars while others steal farm produce. There are others too who cannot live without stealing electronic gadgets, but for Kwabena Ayisi, a 48-year-old, ex-policeman turned insurance agent, his Casanova tendencies made him a specialist of a different kind.

Ayisi's speciality was apparently to befriend women and then dupe them.

When Ayisi got a job as an insurance agent at Dormaa-Ahenkro and Abesim both in the Brong-Ahafo Region, he allegedly befriended 13 women in the area, at different times, promising them marriage and thus succeeded in duping them of their personal effects, including cooking utensils, and other kitchen ware and jewellery.

Three of the women eventually traced him to the regional office of the company at Sunyani where they had gone to lodge a complaint. The women grabbed him and dragged him to the Sunyani Metropolitan Police.

Investigations into his background revealed more about his activities.

The Municipal Police Commander, C.T. Yohonu, who briefed the Times here, said Ayisi was dismissed from the Police Service in 1981, for engaging in similar acts of duping women whom he befriended.

He said about four years ago, Ayisi was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Kumasi Circuit Court, for duping many women and selling their property.

Mr. Yohonu said in April, last year he was engaged as an agent by an insurance company at Abesim where he carried out his latest escapade.

Mr. Yohonu said that after Ayisi's arrest by the three women, the other 10, went to the station with their stories of how Ayisi had conned them.

Ayisi has been charged with defrauding by false pretences pending prosecution.
