Court fines man for embalming corpse in his house

Sekondi, July 10, GNA - A Sekondi District Magistrate's court on Monday imposed a fine of 500,000 cedis on Nyame Ne Yen Boafo of New Takoradi for keeping and embalming a corpse in his house.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge of nuisance.

The court ordered the Police to take the corpse to the mortuary for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.

It said half of the fine should be paid to the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA).

The case of the prosecution was that sometime last week, the Environmental Health Department of SAEMA had a tip off that the accused was keeping a dead body in his house He said the informant told officials of the department that the body had been embalmed in the house.

The prosecution said the officials went to the house of the accused at New Takoradi and found that the information was correct. He said the body is still at the house of the accused and is to be buried on July 15, this year.

The prosecution said the body should have been taken to the mortuary for autopsy to avoid the outbreak of diseases and the behaviour of the accused was in contravention of the byelaws of SAEMA.
