Mrs Kafui Aku Fiakpornoo, outgoing Western Regional Director of Education, on Friday called on mathematics teachers to devise methods to make the subject interesting and understandable to students and pupils.

She made the call at a conference and workshop of the regional branch of the Mathematics Association of Ghana (MAG) at Sekondi.

The event, which formed part of the activities marking the 46th anniversary of the association was under the theme "Mathematics Education in Ghana: Problems and Solutions".

Mrs. Fiakpornoo said many students and pupils have developed a phobia for the subject because of the way it was being taught.

She said deficiencies in teaching have contributed to downward trend in the success rate of pupils and students of the subject.

Mrs Fiakpornoo said, "Rarely do we see the powerful demonstration and activity method of teaching of the subject on display in classrooms".

She added that, "Some teachers even go to the extent of giving notes on Mathematics just as it is done for social studies, history and economics".

Mrs Fiakpornoo advised mathematics teachers to give home assignments and undertake periodic assessment of pupils and students for certification.

She urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, Non-Governmental Organisations, industrial establishments and philanthropists to assist schools and colleges in their areas to establish computer laboratories to enhance the teaching and learning of science, mathematics and related subjects.

Mrs Fiakornoo asked the conference to come out practical approaches to the teaching of mathematics and the development of ICT programmes with emphasis on mathematics.
