The Eastern Regional Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw, Eric Kwakye Darfour, has lost his New Patriotic Party Primary in one of the major shocks from the Eastern Region.
He came second to a teacher and businessman, Joseph Frimpong, who won in a field of six candidates.
Joseph Frimpong won with 206 votes, Eric Kwakye Darfour had 159 votes and Seth Adjei Baah, a former MP for the area, had 156.
One of the more notable aspirants, David Asante, the Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company, also performed below expectation securing only 73 votes.
Other candidates were Joyce Opoku Boateng with 82 votes and Kwabena Adusa with 28 votes.
The Nkawkaw is a stronghold for the NPP, although the party lost it to the then-independent candidate, Seth Agyei Baah, in 2008.
