Editorial: On Wrong Side Of Morality

Regrettably, we have learnt that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lent its full support for 'Apostle' Kwabena Owusu Agyei charged with various breaches and, therefore, currently in custody.

We are pained to learn that the NDC, with its so-called governance pedigree, having mutated from a junta into a political party, would openly support such a character.

The junta way of doing things could have had a hand in the party not finding anything untoward with a so-called apostle hurling insults on others, threatening to kill a mother and even fanning the embers of ethnocentric sentiments in a multi-ethnic society.

We can state unequivocally that the NDC associates with the volumes of vitriolic outbursts the man showered on individual Ghanaians of repute during this ranting. He could have gone on and on even as the NDC clapped for him behind the scenes.

What kind of a party do we have in the country for which moralities do not mean anything?

What future are we building for the kids of this country when what we are telling them is that it is okay to insult others and to cast aspersions on their image without substantiating the defamatory remarks?

There is no justification for the NDC to continue being on the side of lawlessness and uncouth conduct by sponsoring the perpetrators, having been at the helm of affairs of this country for a long time. The party is on the wrong side of history and unless it genuinely rebrands most Ghanaians, including us, would continue to regard it as a party which supports hooliganism. We are sorry we have to be this brusque just so we can deal exhaustively with the subject.

The case of 'Montie 3' comes to mind. The three persons who were obviously in breach of the laws of the land were duly convicted and jailed. The NDC found nothing wrong with their remarks on air as suggested by the leadership of the party, taking turns to solidarise with the convicts when they were in prison. Equally, the then President John Mahama, the man they were working for, pardoned them.

We are equally hurt that the largest opposition party would continue on its unfortunate tangent of running down state institutions built over many years.

Kwabena Owusu Agyei, the man at the centre of this commentary, tested positive for tramadol and cannabis sativa or wee, but the NDC is questioning the authenticity of the tests and, therefore, dragging the image of the relevant state institutions in the mud.

First, the party questioned the authenticity of the discovery of wee on the person of the suspect. Now, the laboratory results of the suspect's urine samples are not convincing enough for the party as it takes the side of propaganda.

Personnel of the Police Hospital are first and foremost professionals in their chosen fields before donning the cop uniforms. These doctors, pharmacists and laboratory scientists and others are guided in their professions by laid-down ethics which they dare not breach. They can, therefore, not generate erroneous laboratory results for the suspect as the NDC is claiming on the public space. Come on NDC! Be serious for once.
