Anthelm Brilliat-Savarin once said " You are what you eat." What we take in affects us in all facets of our lives and singing is no exception.

The main weapon of a singer is their vocal chord, so when a singer consciously ensures that their vocal chords are in good shape they stand a better chance of producing quality sounds all the time. Singing is better enjoyed when singers consciously monitor their vocal health .Vocal health is maintained when" good singing foods" are consumed. We can infer from Anthelm Brilliat-Savarin's quote that the quality of a singer's voice strongly correlates with how well they consciously monitor their diet.

This article seeks to highlight some "Good singing foods" which is a therapy to ensure good vocal health aside voice training.

The quality of a singer's voice depends on how well the singer takes care of their vocal chords. The vocal chord as the natural sound producing instrument functions better when lubricated. Therefore, taking in foods which enhances the production of hydrated mucin proteins (mucus) should be prioritized by singers since mucus is the lubricant of the vocal chord.The vocal health of a singer can make or break their performance.

The Eatables of A Singer

It is suggested that ,foods that hydrates your voice or are rich in protein are best for singers.Singers are implored to avoid spicy foods as well as caffeinated drinks because such foods irritate your vocal chords.The list below are some suggested foods that improves the vocal health of a singer.

  1. Warm water
  2. Herbal teas
  3. Manuka Honey
  4. Lemon
  5. Cucumber
  6. Salads
  7. Fresh fruits
  8. Fish
  9. Ginger

This list is not exhaustive, there are several other "good singing foods" that ensure a good vocal health. The best of it all is to stay as hydrated as possible by taking in preferably water at room temperature.

In conclusion, it is suggested that a singer must consciously monitor their vocal health by taking in "good singing foods" because eating better makes you sound better and vice versa.
