A 23-year-old man, Ellis Bruce Tagoe, has been charged at a Tema Circuit Court over the death of Catherine Johnson, the 16-year-old whose body was found near the Sakumo Lagoon last Friday. Bruce Tagoe is the alleged boyfriend of Catherine, a first-year student of the Fijai Secondary School, near Takoradi.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court that Catherine left her home at Tema Comunity 3 on June 7 and her body was found the next day at the lagoon.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said, police investigations showed that she was seen in the company of Tagoe the night before the body was found.

It was also established that a necklace found on the body belonged to Tagoe, and when he was questioned, he admitted giving it to her. Tagoe was subsequently arrested and charged.

The Court, presided over by Mr Nicholas Abodakpi, remanded the accused in prison custody until July 24. He pleaded not not guilty.
Catherine's body was found lying prostrate near the “Bird Watchin” post at the lagoon, about 500 metres from her home on June 8.

Her hands were said to have been tied together with a torn piece her blouse and her brassiere tied around her neck, with bruises on her body, the police said, adding that her underwear was found a few feet away.
