What Sociologist Offer Society

As a member of society, a student of sociology – society is all there is an environment within which all members interact. Interactions are based on social stratification, social class, social mobility, religion, secularization, rule of law, sexuality, gender and deviance – all-inclusive (inclusivity).

Research works conducted by sociologists may be applied directly to formulate a social policy. The entire subject spans between micro-level analyses of society to macro-level analyses. Research (quantitative / qualitative) by sociologists has helped greater economies since their reliance on social research has impacted on industries and other sectors of life for instance, politicians, policy makers, legislators, educators, planners, administrators, business moguls, social work, NGO’s as well, as interested individuals in quest to resolve societal issues generally.

Thus, with regard to the Ghanaian society, we are confronted with a HUGE problem with the adoption of the 1992 constitution by a military dictatorship, PNDC (provisional national defense council) just like the magna carta of the U.K drafted in June 15, 1215. The PNDC was a criminal organization, the architects of the coup against the third republic under Dr. Hilla Limann’s administration were supposed to be tried as such, but in order to escape the offence of treason, they (PNDC) shoved down the throat of Ghanaian’s, the 1992 constitution with entrenched clauses to provide immunity against the heinous crime committed against the state. Meaning, the PNDC committed treason, excessive judiciary blunders, behemoth and brontosaurus corruption, divestiture and acquisition of state properties i.e. NSAWAMM CANNERY, etc.etc. etc. by the erstwhile PNDC regime yet, they can’t be investigated and prosecuted. PNDC formed NDC with state resources.

The 1992 constitution which operates the fourth republic practices “authoritative” democracy, centralized government based on “winner takes all “with excessive executive powers ( same as under PNDC). The only seeming democracy offered by the 1992 constitution is “register and vote”. But, “accountability” which is the KEY is not demanded by the people because, under the PNDC admin, they yearned to talk, they have the opportunity to talk, but, accountability of national resources, wealth and finances missing because, the terrible talkers are simply emotionally inclined ( ethnic tribal and extreme partisan politics) but, not objective. The people are caught in the whims and caprice of the political propaganda. Typical catch phrase adopted by Ghanaians under the 1992 constitution (a bully) is “if you can’t beat them, join them”. In psychology, this is termed “identification with the aggressor “proposed by Sandor Ferenczi and later developed by Anna Freud. Meaning, you are option – less – this is what the 1992 constitution offers. This shuts – down the capacity of the average Ghanaian to live, work, and seek well – being as a human person. This threatens the so – called fourth republic. The threat is more intense, when the political duo has an existence, operation and execution of dirty – jobs by political terrorists termed “vigilantes” – a criminal organization. Why? To gain power by “hook or crook”, assault and assassinate opponents (both within and / or without) because, without power, they have no option. And, this is the democracy the fourth republic offers, option – less. The legislators and judiciary who are supposed to be equal partners with the executives are option – less. They have been submerged (compromised). They have “identified with the aggressor”. The security and defense of the state are politically manipulated. The masses are “ observers are worried”. Both dominant NDC, NPP of Ghana politics under the 1992 constitution with potency to form government in each general elections are beneficiaries of the “authoritative” democracy. The masses, hypocritically ingenuous people play ball. Where do we go from here ? Oblivion! They cry wolf in opposition. In power, they are in – bed with public institutions – IDIOTS!
